Welcome back followers,

Since the last time I was posted on the Blog I have been back in Galway as I had to attend a tutorial day for college. Throughout the past few months I have been writing reports on all of the departments that I have worked in, so I have handed in all of my assignments. It was great to see everyone again and it was also good to hear that everyone in the course were busy throughout the summer.
Last weekend the Electric Picnic was on in a near by town, there were many guests who were staying in the hotel for the weekend so they could attend the Picnic, we were extremely busy and the festival buzz around the hotel was excellent.

Many thanks to everyone who has sent me an email it was great to hear from you all, if anyone else would like to know anything about the course please don't hesitate to contact me via email phogan.heritage@gmail.com

Learn how to become a Manager within a hotel

Welcome back followers to my road as Trainee Manager. Since I last posted on the blog I have remained working in the Fitzmaurice Restaurant to assist with cover for staff holidays. This past week the HR Manager carried out an internal hotel Health & Safety audit for which I was consulted on as I am the hotels Health & Safety Representative with tasks for which I am responsible to maintain.

If anyone is interested in becoming a manager within a hotel or would like any information about the course, Trainee Manager Development Programme with Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) I thought I would offer my email address to you so you can email me with any enquiries you may have, phogan.heritage@gmail.com or visit http://www.picktourism.ie/en/Earn-Learn/Trainee-Manager/ It really is an interesting course and as you can gain experience by working in each department of the hotel and going to college for one month to learn the theory behind the work it really is the best way to discover which department you would eventually like to become a manager of.

I'm afraid that is all I have for this week but why not come back next week as I am soon due to change department so there will be loads to tell, until then.

A week of multi-tasking....

Thanks again for taking the time to read our blog. This week I am multi-tasking, as staff in other departments are on holidays I am assisting with holiday cover in a few different departments. The Coffee Bean, Hotel Reception, Fitzmaurice Restaurant for breakfast and Accommodation, moving through each of the departments is very self-motivating as you're always learning something new. I must admit though, it was great though to get back to the Fitzmaurice as I am more of a people person and I love to chat to the hotel guests.

I have to tell you all that I was down in the hotel staff canteen recently and I was delighted to see a letter of wonderful feedback from guests who had recently stayed in the hotel and complimented me on my good humour, stories and suggestions on where to visit it has put me in flying form, sure isn't it great to be praised.

Log on next week to see where I will be developing my skills further...

Accommodation Part 2 (The Joys of Accommodation)

Welcome back followers, now that I'm still in accommodation nearly 2 weeks I have been given the same amount of rooms as the other staff members, in total 13 rooms. The Accommodation Supervisor has been watching me like a hawk so there is no skipping over anything as she expects the same high level of standards as the other staff. The Supervisor pulled me up on a few small things but I didnt mind as I learn from my mistakes. Aside from addressing me on a few little mistakes we still get on like a house on fire. One of the girls that works in accommodation I know her from primary school and I haven't seen her in a long time so it was great to catch up and we have a great laugh. I always like to say "it's great to be able to have a laugh but at the same time be able to get the work done". Well I think that's all for now so I'll head on and I'll chat to ye all next week bye for now........

Accommodation

Welcome back to my road on becoming a General Manager. From my last entry I have left the Fitzmaurice and have gone up to the land of Accommodation. To be honost I thought it was going to be a doddle, but to my Surprise I found that there is alot of work to be done in order for a bedroom to be correctly cleaned and ready for the next guest. The stores have also to be kept cleaned and stocked at all times and so does your trolley. Accommodation also covers the Public Area (PA) which involves cleaning the public toilets, the reception area aswell, and the halls where the guests and the public would be inclined to be. I start work at 7am and would start with cleaning the public area ( Which is broken into sections for the staff that are on), When Public areas are cleaned I go to the Accommodation Office where the Accommodation Supervisor asigns me rooms to clean but not to many at this time because I woulnt be as fast as the other staff, I finish work around half 3 hopefully thats if I get all my rooms cleaned. Up in Accommodation it is hard work, well I would think so. If you would like to follow more of my story i will be updateing it every Friday, Untill Then Take Care...............

Ever want to become a Hotel General Manager...

Hi All,

My name is Paddy Hogan, I am a Trainee Manager here at the Portlaoise Heritage Hotel and have been for the last 12 months. It was while working here I discovered what career path I wanted to take, so here's how it all started...

On 26th September 2007 I entered the grand entrance of the Portlaoise Heritage Hotel as an innocent 18 year old at the time with an ambition to become an Art Teacher and stay only until the end of the summer 2008. My first role was as a Food & Beverage Attendant, needless to say in the hotel industry nothing is ever easy and on my first night we had a wedding of over 250 guests...I thought at the time that “this is the hardest I've ever worked” but since then I've looked back at that first night and realised how easy it was.

In May 2008 I was awarded Employee of the Month, this was a fantastic acheivement and encouraged me to pursue a career in Hotel Management. Later that year I was also awarded Employee of the Year with a prize that would entice anyone to work hard to exceed all expectations.

During my time in the Portlaoise Heritage Hotel the hotel has awarded me for my hard work by enrolling me on relevant hotel hospitality courses for example, Occupational First Aid, Hospitality Management, Customer Service Skills, Defibrillator Training and a Health and Safety Representative Course which have all developed my skills further and allowed me to review areas of the hotel for new initiatives to be implemented through the help and guidance of the Department Heads and the Hotel General Manager. As a result I am now the hotel’s Health and Safety Representative.

What I enjoy most about my role is the variety, I am gaining experience in each department of the hotel and every day learning new and interesting aspects of the role of Hotel General Manager for which I am aspiring to. Each day I may face a new challenge but each challenge drives me to develop my skills further and to exceed my personal goals. There is nothing more rewarding to me than to receive thanks or a compliment on the job you have done. I greatly appreciate it when a guest thanks me for a task I have carried out for them or just simply because they have enjoyed their stay. I also appreciate negative feedback as it helps us improve our product, service and standards, as we can always build on what we have.

On the funny side my manager has a gift at catching me doing nothing, a prime example of this is one day I was after cleaning the bar from top to bottom and for a brief moment I decided to take a 'Time Out' and who walks through the door only “my manager”, I've never jumped to attention so quickly in all my life and since that experience I have enhanced my 'Time Out' skills and learned to always have a duster to hand!

From the Hotel Bar I moved to the Hotels three restaurants, Spago's Italian Restaurant, Kelly's Foundry Grill House and currently in the Fitzmaurice Fine Dining Restaurant. Each restaurant has its own atmosphere, but out of them all I have found the Fitzmaurice Fine Dining Restaurant to be my favourite overall, the Fitzmaurice team work very well together and they accepted me as a manager without any difficulty without any resistance and they have guided me along the way. I also have the benefit of learning another language as they have been teaching me Polish also which has been great fun!

Log on next week to find out where I'm going next and what challenges I'll face in the up coming days...
